Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there a way to automatically block every user from a certain instance in addition to just blocking the entire instance itself?English
81·3 days agoYou’ve missed the point, I’m afraid. The bar is someone’s individual feed, and the bartender is their blocklist (or their server’s federation list) deciding who gets to stay and who is thrown out on their ear.

133·3 days agoYou know that adage about how a bar turns into a Nazi bar? (Don’t get hung up on the word ‘Nazi’. The type of asshole is irrelevant to my point.) The decent ones are just the wedge.
The fedi-verse is big enough for me without assholes and asshole apologists.

381·4 days agoHalf of Congress would probably be perfectly happy caucusing with the other team. They don’t care and tout whatever party line gets them paid. AIPAC and MORON-PAC (i.e. MAGA pocketbooks) have been very lucrative partnerships for them.
All I’m saying is it’s probably all a dog and pony show for Jeffreys. He probably has no interest or stomach for a protracted fight when they can just coast and give some lip service.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you get over stumbling upon the most beautiful girl in the world?English
301·5 days agoAppreciate her beauty and remember it is ephemeral. With a few exceptions, all of us look mid at best by 50, let alone 70. Beauty is beautiful to look at. I appreciate beauty, but I wouldn’t trade my wife for the most beautiful woman in the world.
My uncle has a way of putting this: no matter how great a woman is, someone, somewhere, is sick of her shit. I generously assume he also meant for that to apply with the genders reversed.

News@lemmy.world•Why are Americans paying more for health insurance? Experts give 3 reasonsEnglish
7·5 days agoProfits must always go up. Ideally (for capitalists) faster than they were going up before. When you’re putting a price tag on services folks need to live, making sure you hit your projected margins is a lot easier. You can simply choose not to suffer the effects of economic downturn. Unlike the rest of us.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What purpose will humans have when AI will be able to do all thinking for us?English
1·6 days agoIt could be the purpose of carbon life has been to create the thing that follows and surpasses us. We are limited in lifespan and our ability to travel vast interstellar distances to preserve our species when this solar system can no longer sustain us. And we want to make sure our AIs can kick the asses of Alpha Centauri AI.
Anyway, I don’t believe we have any purpose except in retrospect. There is just who we are, and some day there is the thing that wouldn’t happen or be created without us. And that will have been our purpose.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How was radio able to survive the rise of TV in the latter half of the 20th century?English
311·6 days agoPrice. You can buy an AM/FM radio on an integrated circuit for probably under a dollar ready to integrate. I’ve seen radios given away as swag including wired earbuds.
Ubiquitous access to portable devices that show video is close, but the devices are expensive, data is expensive, and watching video while driving is illegal.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do we really want Lemmy's userbase to grow and assimilate "normies"?English
12·7 days agoI’m not sure if I’m a normie or weirdo here. Like I enjoyed the internet when it was just a bunch of tech nerds sharing their geekery with one another. And I hate that now it’s full of morons who inundate the rest of us with their love of sportball and reality tv and fucking mundanity. But also there are weirdos here that I want nothing to do with. So this all strikes me as very perspective-dependent.
