The Russian had a huge cold war bio weapons program.

Even accidentally releasing anthrax into one of their cities.

It sound like they have revived it.

You can be sure it never stopped. Even nations like Canada will have a research program, probably used to help defend against bio agents. I guarantee Russia has been working on bio weapons without interruption.

Stupid to use. Calling it stupid while it slaughters you isn’t very effective though, so you still kinda have to develop a defense against it.

While that was a stupid thing to do. The bacteria they used was believed to be harmless.

And certainly was not in any way equivalent to anthrax.

Fuck Mother Jones…there was no “outbreak”. One person died of pneumonia. Why was she handling y.pestis without a mask?

Correction, October 4: Yersinia pestis is a bacterium, treatable with antibiotics (if available), not a virus.

This article is all over the place with bullshit.

tbf it’s russia, like china it’s hard to trust what they put out but the gist is that they are worried there’s an outbreak:

Local media had previously reported that the woman, who worked at an institute dedicated to fighting plague, had dropped a test tube.

She reportedly died on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the district hospital in Shelekhov, a town near Irkutsk in Siberia.

According to official Russian figures, two hospitals and a children’s clinic were placed under quarantine. Local reports said staff at the institute were being quarantined at their workplace. The US news site Axios has reported that around 200 people who had been in contact with the woman had been placed under observation. There were no further reported infections.

But they’re quarantining hospitals! It can’t just be precaution! Why would they do that? It must be an outbreak! /s
