  • The Republican party was in a very similar position in 2008, with Bush being toxic. Yesterday’s election is in fact being compared with the wipeout in 2008. And yet, the Republican party did not die in 2008.

Bush II campaigned on “no foreign adventures” and “no nationbuilding”, then went into Iraq and did exactly that. Along with all kinds of corruption and incompetence.

Don’t get me wrong, the Republican party absolutely deserves to die - anybody who votes for them is evil and an idiot. But recent history teaches us that pronouncing their demise can be premature.

  • It’s this right here. Nobody will be able to look intently, because no one will have the knowledge of what to look for anymore. You are able to effectively manage the stupid machine’s output because you actually know more or less what functional code looks like and how it works. Once that skill has been squeezed out of the industry it’s going to be utter chaos.

I see no reason why people can’t learn to do this task.

I learned to write an operating system kernel in college. Not because I would ever need to do that in a job, but because it was considered important to learn how stuff worked, to gain a deeper understanding to make architectural decisions. I also learned to write assembly, for the same reason. Similarly, good educations in the future will likely teach people to code, even if they will never code in their jobs.

  • Republicans are still projected to get something like 40-50% of the votes next election. Given how much the Republican party is the party of Trump, pretty much every vote for a Republican is a vote for Trump. All the Republicans who opposed Trump have already been primaried out at this point.

What actual policies does the Republican party even stand for, at this point? “No new wars”? Economic responsibility? Preserving freedom and democracy? Small government? Real Christian values like helping the poor? Preserving the status quo? Free market capitalism? Free speech? No, they stand for Trump and racism, and nothing else.

So while you can (rightfully) quibble about the specific % I mentioned being misleading, the underlying Trump support is huge.

  • Supporting Trump was always about making MAGA feel good about themselves, feels not reals. Trump’s actual policy outcomes almost never mattered.

Perhaps the main policy point of Trump was anti foreign adventure, alongside being anti-immigration and anti-inflation. And now Trump has started an optional war in Iran which is arguably even stupider than Bush II’s Iraq War. Which has caused inflation to sky-rocket. And the national debt is spiraling out of control. And yet, 76% of Republicans still approve of Trump. I don’t think most people realize how literally insane the loyalty of the Republican voter base is.
