  • Because a large part of that price is actually due to the convenience. Sure, there is still a large markup but it also has to pay for the rent at that convenient location, the people preparing it for you, the equipment and maintenance, the energy bill for keeping the lights on and heating, insurance, etc. etc.

None of those things apply when you make it at home. Costs for a supermarket are also much lower per item, cheaper location, less personnel needed to sell you a bag of beans and a whole cart of other stuff vs. preparing a coffee.

  • If you live alone that’s a lot, if you live with 2 or 3 other people that’s regular amount

40 is absurdly high for 2-3 people who do not use electric heating.

We do on average 20kWh a day with 2 people and that’s already crazy high. According to the monthly energy usage report I get from the energy company that’s about a normal usage for a familiy of 5. It’s that high because I have a lot of computers (servers), a home cinema with a large TV and a big amplifier driving 11 speakers and multiple subwoofers. In addition to the normal stuff like 2 electric ovens, a Quooker (basically my kitchen faucet keeps a 7 liter vat of water at boiling temperatures 24/7 so I can have instant boiling water from the tap) an induction stove, dishwasher, dryer and washing machine. Also in-floor heating which while gas powered means there’s an electric pump running 24/7 to keep the water circulating.

Me and a few colleagues are a bit obsessed with tracking energy usage, we all have solar panels and home batteries and with variable pricing you can make a little money buying electricity when it’s cheap and selling it back when demand and prices are high. We’re talking a few euros a day, not really worth the effort but it kind of became a game.

Just to say, we discuss energy usage a lot at the office. One colleague who lives alone in a regular size house uses about 2-3kWh a day. Another colleague who has a large house with full electric heating (heat pump) and who drives an EV may do 30-40kWh/day in winter, and that’s with a wife and 2 teenage kids.

  • They don’t “take jobs”, they save work.

Jobs are a means to an end, not a goal in itself. Jobs are not a good thing, they are a necessary evil. Things need to be done and someone needs to do them. Once we run out of stuff that needs doing, we don’t make up new work just to keep people busy. Do you think our hunter/gatherer ancestors sent out people to gather berries when they already had more than enough just so everyone could have a ‘job’? Of course not.

Our goal should be to eleminate all jobs, or at least as many as possible. Every job that is eliminated means more free time for humans to do things that actually matter.

You are confusing needing a job with needing an income. People need incomes, they don’t need jobs. You can hand people the income without creating meaningless work for them.

It’s like those stupid fundraisers where someone does a meaningless task in order to raise money. “I’m walking from the east coast to the west coast of the US to raise money for cancer research”. Why are people requiring you do something this pointless before donating? You gain nothing by requiring this. It makes no sense.

    Several reasons

    • If a private key leaks, a shorter certificate lifespan limits the fallout
    • Faster upgrades to new cryptographic standards. If some of the crypto methods used get broken, short lived certificates means they get replaced with newer methods faster
    • Short lived certificates force sysadmins to automate the renewal process. This prevents expired certificates due to forgetting the manual renewal.
    • Certificate lifetime and domain ownership mismatch. You could buy a 2 year certificate for somedomain.com and then sell the domain or just let it expire and have it picked up by someone else. You then have a valid certificate for a domain you no longer ow and you could MitM traffic for the new owner’s website.
