  • Do you try to force a daisy to bloom in winter? Do you insist a bear comes out of its hibernation? Must the bee produce honey or cicada buzz out of tune with its own nature?

We, too, have our seasons. It’s okay. Winter is a season of winding down, of the rest phase before renewal. Our societies demand we maintain productivity when our bodies tell us otherwise, and we do what we must to keep food on the table and a roof over our head but beyond that it’s okay to rest.

The Danes and Norwegians have a concept called hygge that embraces the cold weather season. It’s also why a lot of northern hemisphere countries (can’t speak for elsewhere, feel free to chime in) make it a season of lights and festivity.

I’ve also got seasonal affective and take vitamin D, and the reasoning above is how I cope with each year. Accepting the hibernation feeling and adapting with gentle love instead of force is not weakness.

  • I’m past the point of wanting to be, and more focused on what I want to do.

I’m actually pretty happy with who I am and a lot of that has come with age, wisdom, and having the support system to be more fully and bravely myself. I’m confident and happy enough to worry a lot less of others’ view of me because of that steady foundation. I also know that’s a massive privilege.

What I want to do is make other people’s lives better where I can. I want to share the advantages given to me, the resources I have, and leave things a little better in my wake than when I found them. I want to lift others up and see them grow and thrive. Whether or not people know or even remember that is not something I’m concerned with, because it’s the impact I care about.

I also want to enjoy the time I have while I have it. I know I’m only one person and can’t change the whole world by myself or at once and operate within that framework. And I’m mostly okay with that now.

  • Definitely: throwing a bash. Got the house like 90% decorated, still gotta make a couple treats but I’ve got the set list and food and everything else ready and I can’t wait.

Hopefully: handing out candy to trick or treaters. Recently moved to a cute neighborhood, I got a bunch of sweets and the front porch light will be on as long as I’m awake pretty much.

Halloween is my top favorite holiday and sharing mischievous joy is how I like to celebrate 😄🎃

  • Thank you, that clarifies it.

I don’t think we can necessarily stop the production of the content itself, but being one drop in a bucket of consciously avoiding it (much easier said than done) can add up if you act as an encouraging example.

Prioritize long form media; watch movies and read books. Watch only 10-15+ minute YouTube videos, and overall choose your intake with intent. Even long-form articles and essays count.

In terms of making that switch: unplugging and giving your brain some rest can help - taking in so much short-form can drain your mental battery more than you realize. Passive overstimulation from constant media drip adds up. Give yourself time between episodes/movies/what have you to let yourself digest and process what you watched, and take some time to reflect on what you liked and didn’t like about each thing. You don’t have to write it down, but you’d be surprised what the breathing room does in terms of sparking your own thoughts and opinions as well 😄 /gen /pos

  • Locally hosted models are less egregious than corporate cloud models that actively harvest and monitor your data.

Corporate AI feeds the surveillance machine, that in turn is used to suppress dissent.

That and GenAI output in anything creative or market-based gets very same-y and gives the end user an impression of the creator not caring to put in effort. Perceived low effort = spam.

Lastly, genAI gets pushed into everything. It’s a matter of simple oversaturation and it gets exhausting to have it seemingly everywhere. Not having the option to turn it off becomes, well, a turnoff. 🤷🏻
