Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's everyone thinking about on this Friday evening?
3·1 day agoOne week isn’t much time. Take some time to recover, but from my experience that recovery can become self-reincorcing isolation, so you’ll have to get out there eventually. For now, file for unemployment, figure out health care if needed, and get contact info for people you want to keep contact with. Unemployment sucks hard enough, best to focus on recovery for a bit

3·1 day agoOur biweekly game that I DM became monthly and then just sort of stopped last year. It felt like folks had other priorities and I took it a bit harder than I should’ve. It’s crazy how much time and thought you can put into a homebrew campaign that centers players’ stories

16·4 days agoSure, don’t get even. Make a big anti-corruption legislation push. Out in the open, include investigations.
Then do what is needed. Dems need to act like they’re anti corruption

9·4 days agoGina and Angie were my stretch wishes. Glad I got one of the 2!
With all the influx, Texas is going to get like 4 new reps after the next census, having a dem governor means that they can veto any ratfuckery with the maps. Good job, Texazul!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your plans to get through this next major global recession?
6·9 days agoMaybe dumb question: are there loose trade groups that could share advertising / business digging? Or are you basically in competition with everyone else in your field?

3·9 days agoMaybe change careers? My job will end soon and I’m looking for something more stable and values-aligned rather than exciting. I figure people need houses -Any structural engineers want to chime in on how to get into that work late?

Taking a slightly different tack, I think a lot of the extractive destruction of our quality of life is due to our failure to understand the sociopathy of the ultrawealthy and how preventing them is necessary for our way of life.
The "middle class* as we think of it is an historical aberration. Most of recorded history is a few owners and roughly everyone else living in poverty. That’s what I see coming down the bend if we don’t act pretty damn soon

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that Oregon is the first state in the United States to conduct its elections exclusively by mail.English
4·22 days agoUnfortunately, the horribleness here is largely intentional. E.g. Texas Republicans just closed 92 voting locations in one of their largest counties (Tarrant). That’s almost 30% of the total.
One of our parties consistently tries to make voting less accessible - and they’re the party in power right now

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that Oregon is the first state in the United States to conduct its elections exclusively by mail.English
73·24 days agoAnd it’s great. No lines, no waiting. Get your voting guide a week before, get your ballot, drink some coffee while you peruse the issues and candidates, look stuff up if you’re not sure about things, drop the ballot off at the library after work.
You hear “stay in line after polls close!” Or about folks waiting 4+ hours, or it being illegal to hand out water/food to people in line and it reads like madness.
Vote by mail is so damned civilized in comparison

Agree with this one. I recorded my grandma and asked her about her childhood and how she met folks, etc. Can recommend!
