I wish some subjects could be apolitical: there’s no reason for trans healthcare to be politicized while other healthcare is seen as a basic need. But as we know, even “healthcare is a basic need” is a topic of political discussion in some countries (cough). The choice to make it “apolitical” is itself a political act. So yes, everything is political. From the food you eat to the music you listen to.

Are they containering one sort of item though? I’m ordering stuff and it takes regular shipping times from China, so it doesn’t seem like they have local stock, but I’m also not paying the surcharge. So either they’re shipping large quantities of the things I buy and storing it for next time, or they’re stuffing a couple thousand orders in a container and avoiding the individual parcel tax that way. (Or they pretend it takes 3 weeks, but actually just ship from Italy on day 18.)

I just don’t understand what the desired outcome is here. Alibaba already builds warehouses in the EU and sends entire shipping containers of orders at a time, to be sorted and labeled after “import”. So the 60% drop in individual parcels isn’t a drop in imports, it’s just an administrative detour.

But I can’t imagine any big vulnerabilities in a local frontend anyway? I’d be more worried about accidentally sending/resending requests and generating unnecessary load for the server. For authentication it’s hard to mess up as long as you’re not sending passwords to servers other than the one you’re trying to log in.

You’re right about big numbers losing relevance in our minds, but I don’t think that’s even true for units of measurement. Since all units are arbitrary, they are inherently linked to a mental model with simple maths, quick conversions and rules of thumb. 450 ants is too large to visualize, but 450cm is simply the height where an old chestnut tree’s branches start. There are no 450 distinct centimeters involved in any of that, so you don’t have to keep them in your mind.

Compress down, guesstimate a piece of physical distance, continue with your day. Whether that mental model started as 15 foot or 450 centimeter isn’t really relevant, as long as you have developed a sense for the size of various things in your chosen units, and the units map nicely to other common units you might encounter. If you need any more precision, you take out your tools.

All measurements are arbitrary. This feels like that Fahrenheit debate where “60 feels natural for room temperature” as if anyone has any idea what number a room should be. A meter is just a chunk of distance about this size (holds hands apart). There’s nothing a foot can add to a measurement that a meter can’t. You’ll need fractions and smaller or bigger units in all real world cases anyway, so having easy conversions is much more useful than a “natural” base unit.
