LOL just ignore karma points, they mean nothing - I don’t even know what mine is or where to find it.

Yes, Reddit’s advantage is that its niche communities are much larger, so there’s more interaction than in their lemmy counterparts. And fortunately those communities tend to be more friendly and non-political than the more mainstream areas.

Also expect some fierce emotional venting that thinks it’s an “argument”.

Ignore karma and just have fun.

That’s any hivemind for you tho - everybody in it believes they’re very well informed about every significant aspect of something, and absolutely confident in the set of collective opinions.

One of the obstacles to self-driving cars is the unpredictability of human drivers. Even as good as tech already is, if we could somehow completely start over with ONLY self-driving cars, they would be so much simpler, not to mention saving about 40,000 lives per year. If human-driven cars were invented today they’d be illegal.

Being pro-piracy and hating AI for “stealing” everything is very “It’s okay when WE do it.”

Yes, so many people here are desperate to make sure you know how shiny their halos are.

The absolutism and the common thought process of “it’s obvious” often make me wonder how much of the lemmy community is angsty middle/high school students.

Oh Christ, I went to McDs 3 or 4 years ago for the first time in eons because I got nostalgic for their fish sandwich. I doubt I’ll ever perform that experiment again.

I think people blame AI for incompetent management, which is like blaming a saw for bad carpentry. AI doesn’t force employees to use it whether it’s appropriate or not - managers do that. AI isn’t building massive datacenters regardless of impact - executives are doing that.

I agree with the hivemind’s general direction, but I really hate its absolutist thinking style, which dictates:

It’s hard to picture, as a real human who grew up eating eggs and not laying them. Since the human race has always faced the threat of starvation, I expect the cultural norm would have developed a long time ago that eating your own eggs is perfectly natural and normal. A taboo against eating them would be a serious disadvantage during a famine. We would grow up with many cultural influences about the eggs. Religious texts like the bible would no doubt make moral pronouncements many people would follow without question. It might even be a political issue.

Phrasing!

That explains her chronic back problems, leading to a morbid fascination with building a new body from spare parts.

To me this is like reading that locks are now obsolete because somebody invented a way to unlock them just by touching them. On one hand it makes me angry that somebody would invent such a thing. On the other hand it means locks have always had this hidden weakness which would eventually be figured out, and now here we are. So what do we do next? I mean, in terms of things that might actually help?

Thanks for your great work! Clearly you are an outlier among social media users, most of whom are overwhelmingly (if not exclusively) consumers. My karma-farmer comment was a generalization, not directed at you. I apologize if it gave offense.
As for what anybody hopes to do with social media karma, I really don’t know. Someone once told me well developed reddit accounts can actually be bought and sold, but that has to be a very niche activity. Over the years I’ve abandoned at least a dozen reddit accounts with tens of thousands of points, because I came up with a username I liked more. My best guess is that the main appeal of karma is validation for people who don’t have enough positive interaction IRL, but I’m not trained in psychology.

MAGA disintegrates in orgy of backstabbing as opportunists scramble to fill reeking power vacuum left by massive Big Mac Attack.
I honestly don’t know or care what my lemmy karma is, or even where to look for it.
Also I’ve been banned from a reddit sub and a lemmy community for asking questions I honestly didn’t know the answers to. Reason given in both cases was trolling or ragebaiting. Some communities are highly insular and suspicious of outsiders who don’t have the group mindset. Someone here called lemmy “diverse” - that can translate to a diverse variety of monocultural echo chambers.
