It is that many are familiar with them, they have good support, fairly extendible and great community.
Also used in commercial solutions for those exact reasons.
There is cheaper and better hardware but the RPi has a bit of a goldilocks position.

There are plenty of other chipsets that are lower in power consumption than ESP32. Raspberry Pi does provide the Pico 1 and Pico 2 for embedded stuff which is mostly great. Don’t know if they fixed the errata 9 on the Pico 2 yet with the leaking GPIO thingy.
STM32, AVR based stuff, PIC, ESP32, Pico’s. We got a lot of fun stuff to tinker with.

If that car inspires you to finally release your inner gay, you do you.
Not all driving needs to be fast to be fun. That’s why gokarts exist. Smoll cars are fun because of the turning radius and they can be a fast slow.
Also have you ever seen the original going through corners? Especially in the movies from “La Gendarme de Saint-Tropez”. The nun driving it is having a good day.

You don’t get the 2CV. The ugly duckling is something special. And this revamp is good fun.
Y’all worry so much about looking tough that you don’t see the fun in life.
I really really reaaheeeheeheeheely love Linux. But the rest shouldn’t be an ass about it. Even though it is superior (my opinion) there is plenty of OS’es to go around for everyone. And to each their own.
The choice of an OS doesn’t give anyone permission to be smug and condenscending.
By the way I use whatever works at the moment.
