  • How come the comments are full of conspiracy theories? Is Germany really that scary?

This is an incredibly boring and admittedly very unnecessary discussion about a name that basically doesn’t even have a meaning right now. And it was opposed because of exactly that reason on the one hand, and because it was used before - in the context of Ukraine - on the other.

That’s all there is to it. It’s politicians that don’t want the matters of Canada and Ukraine get mixed up, or to commit to some ‘membership-light’ that simply does not exist right now. Super duper boring. Go worry about something worth worrying about.

  • Germany is governed by the biggest asshole since possibly hitler

Whereas they are like a 10 and a solid 3 on the asshole scale. I totally agree with the first half of your comment, but seriously what is that comparison? Old, out-of-touch, conservative multi-millionaire who upset people with speeches against a multi-millionaire in mass murder?

It’s not that I want to defend Merz, but I do want to call out this lack of nuance and respect for history here real quick…

  • If we decoupled today it would mean immediate economic collapse, I’ll hand him that. He sure is bad with words for a chacellor thought.

But honestly speaking, he’s just one old, out-of-touch guy. I think the people the brought him into power are more to blame than he is. He did not grab power, he was his party’s choice for wielding it.

Even if they act all upset now, he is the CDU’s fault, not vice versa. They elected him, his ideas, promises and speeches. They liked him until the moment they realized politics are hard and he is unpopular. He is a symptom of a party that is corrupt and out of touch itself.

  • It’s all about using your time and money to do as much good as possible by some objective measure. It falls apart completely if you don’t share the objectivist perspective thought. From a nihilistic POV, I would argue these measures don’t really matter at all. In my personal opinion, it’s better to do something that feels important to you personally (both with your time and your money).

That said, I do heavily recommend giving https://80000hours.org/ a look regarding this topic. They are not all about effective alturism, but it is a key part of their work. Their career guide touches on basically all important parts of it, and I think it gives genuinely good advise and some interesting perspectives.

I do buy that at least the authors are actually serious about doing something good here, obviously I have moved past some of their notions thought.

  • I mean, I get why you wouldn’t necessarily want to constantly remind people of past wars. It’s a matter of pragmatism really. The guys you murdered yesterday may help you to murder someone else tomorrow. Or maybe we eventually stop doing so entirely, not constantly reminding people of past enemies might help either way.

I think the Anthem of Europe (‘Ode to Joy’) is really what a hymn should be. It’s not about the past at all, it’s about the future and ideals. The German Anthem is kind of nice too (even the part the Nazis generously reinterpreted in their favour, thus banned/omitted today). It’s also about things to strive for, not triumph or wars. Would be really weird to sign about getting murdered by the French, liberating from the French, murdering the French, or murdering the French again, when I never even had a fistfight with a Frenchmen.

That’s not to say I don’t care about the past, but particularly the relationship between France and Germany goes to show what happens when you don’t leave things in the past, and what is possible when you do.
