The trend reminds me of the adoption of electric cars. Things started out very slowly, but once the adoption takes hold it grows quickly.

Every time the US administration and it’s oligarch friends try to strongarm the rest of the world, they show their cards and loose some of their leverage. It won’t be long before there isn’t enough left to even get a reaction.

I witnessed the combination of the new models and the coding-centered harnesses becoming good enough to solve complex coding-tasks competently, even on close inspection. They just make very few errors now and the code is reasonably well written and designed, at least by my standards. There are exceptions, but they’ve become rare.

I wouldn’t know, these are not the day to day tasks we do.

It went from bad to good in the recent months. Sometimes it’s still bad and we catch this in reviews, but generally the quality is high and increasing.

Only four months back I told anyone who asked that LLMs would never replace developers, because back then they really couldn’t. The modern models in conjunction with their harnesses are a very different thing.

I got you. I thought about the industrial revolution and it’s impact on the individual when learning history, I just never considered I could find myself in a similar situation. It feels unreal.

Yeah, that’s my glimmer of hope, too. We have to keep a close watch on architecture and implementaion quality constantly and that requires real senior developers.

Oh yes, the speed. It’s insane, we already crack jokes about how you won’t recognize your work environment if you take a week off. These jokes betray a harsh reality, things are moving at inhuman speed in many aspects.

But that’s the problem: with current gen LLMs there’s no more puzzle solving involved. You just specify your problem or desired result and the model and harness do the rest. Even the architecture issues are often trivial and obvious, the LLMs get them wrong in boring ways. The job is really about design and very big picture decisions, the joy of discovering a solutions constantly is gone.

Yes, that’s pretty obvious to anyone in the industry. But like many catastrophies mankind can see decades ahead, nothing will be done about until the consequence bite hard. I’ll be old by then.

This captures it more eloquently than I ever could. A feeling of great loss.

What kind?

Oh the bubble will pop, it will be carnage. But it won’t change my situation, the open-weight models already have caught up. We use one for a good part of our work. We actually flip between models and providers quite a bit, LLMs are a commodity. The whole investment scam arond datacenters is totally independent from the actual usage of LLMs, it’s quite bizarre really.

Two trillion valuation, where are you going?

In anderen Artikeln findet man folgende Beispiele:

Agree 100%, this might continue for months before we see the real bottom.
