I’ll be honest, with the prices of RAM and storage nowadays, it’s not an ideal moment to start self-hosting. Given that you already have 3.5’’ drives, I suggest going for a NAS form if you can afford it. Also, a multiple app server with Nextcloud won’t work well unless the system has 8 GB RAM at the minimum, preferably 16. Try getting a more modern processor, as those come with support to encode more recent video formats and you mentioned having a media server.

News@lemmy.world•Danny Masterson Loses Rape Conviction Appeal, Judges Uphold 30-Year Prison Sentence
1·8 days agoPersonally, I veered all the opposite way - now I avoid entertainment in general out of ethical principle, save for very counted exceptions, because 1. people are generally easy to corrupt, so even someone generally regarded as clean can get cancelled at any point in the future, and 2. the entertainment industry has made it their modus operandi to never separate the art from the artist, therefore making the industry in general more and more morally corrupt. And since checking every single individual credit on every single individual work of entertainment in order to avoid supporting immoral people is prohibitively time-consuming, it has become stochastically immoral to have fun. Most people refuse to accept it though, and that’s precisely on what the industry counts to keep things under wraps for as long as possible.

Europe@feddit.org•Is Zelensky right to say data centre strikes have taken down Russian bots?
10·24 days agoThe servers that Russia would be most affected by in case of a disruption would be those of VKontakte - their local everything app, government paperwork manager and panopticon, VK Max, is of mandatory use in Russia to the detraction of all other messengers, so seeing VK’s servers down would mean massive problems for the government

Europe@feddit.org•Is Zelensky right to say data centre strikes have taken down Russian bots?
23·24 days agoThe AI-powered bots that were hosted directly on Yandex servers and could not be moved to a different server (or manually replicated) after the strike, those are the ones that certainly went down - but, of course, it’s only a fraction of a highly distributed disinfo structure, and it will eventually rebuild elsewhere.
Well, as the saying goes, be the change you want in the world - if you find a community that you’d like to see more posts on, and you can contribute, then by all means, please do so

For instance, a server will probably work just right with an Intel N150 processor - decent power, low consumption, and support to encode up to VP9/HEVC (no AV1 though)
