what would you say is “screwing them over the most” in the past few decades?
nuclear energy only contributed about 10% of the total energy consumption of germany though.
the default place, aka. USA
central valley
USA?
£120 food
that is … very low? i spend 300€ on food each month
also what is “175 council tax”?
also damn, “900 mortgage” (for 2 people) each month? that’s surprisingly affordable.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why aren't people outraged about convenience pricing?
1·5 days agofyi tourists go to cafes and pay 4€ for a coffee. meanwhile i grab mine from the supermarket which costs 0,80€
it is possible to pay less; people just don’t care.

1·8 days agobatteries haven’t been built in the past because they weren’t needed, but they’re being built today (look up sodium-ion batteries) and they’re cheap and effective.

1·8 days agosee my other reply in this thread
basically it doesn’t move the moon closer, but it makes the Earth rotate slower. that’s where the energy comes from.
basically the tides transfer angular momentum from the Earth to the moon.

Technology@lemmy.world•Solar Panels Are Now Producing So Much Power That They’re Leaving Nuclear Plants in the Dust: "Solar is now the engine of the power transition."English
1·8 days agoactually, the moon gains angular momentum from the tidal movement that it causes, and that’s what makes it move further away. the reason is that it takes Earth about 1 day to rotate once around its axis, but it takes the moon 28 days to rotate once around Earth’s axis. so Earth has a higher angular velocity, and the tidal movement tries to reduce that difference to make the two tidally locked eventually. ironically, this process transfers angular momentum to the moon (to speed it up), which makes it move further away and thus the angular velocity actually decreases. yeah, orbital mechanics is weird.
(btw this is not a joke. it’s really that way, difficult to comprehend i know).

Technology@lemmy.world•Solar Panels Are Now Producing So Much Power That They’re Leaving Nuclear Plants in the Dust: "Solar is now the engine of the power transition."English
6·8 days agobtw geothermal does not come from the earth’s rotation. it mostly comes from nuclear decay of heavy isotopes in the earth’s interior and the enormous heat capacity of the earth’s interior, which means it’s still warm from the friction heat from when the planet first formed. in other words it’s there since the Earth formed, independent of the sun.
also there’s another (practically accessible) form of energy that comes neither from geothermal nor from the sun: you can pull energy out of the tidal movement that comes from the moon’s changing gravity field as it orbits around our planet. i think that one’s not really being used though because the only way to really utilize it is to build dams across havens and important shipping routes and that interferes with trade, which is considered the more economically valuable activity from the two.

1·8 days agowell actually there’s renewable energy on the cosmological scale (look up E. Harris - Mining Energy In An Expanding Universe), at least theoretically. nobody’s ever practically utilized it (afaik).

and also fuck the personality cult around habeck. haven’t we learned nothing from history? no personality-cults.
