  • Well, 80 years ago maybe. But nowadays Europe doesn’t truly depend on the US. There’s a lot of talk about dependence on US trade and US tech, but that’s true for pretty much every developed nation on the planet (including China).

The key difference is that Europe depends on the US for defense: military capabilities, logistics, intelligence. Without US support, Russia actually has the upper hand when it comes to military strength and capabilities.

The problem is that it is incredible difficult to collectively decouple from the US. Many politicians were reluctant to rearm because they feared overinvestment and overpreparedness for a hypothetical threat that, depending on where in Europe you actually lived, might never even manifest. Even more were reluctant to invest billions in building hypothetical, sovereign alternatives to hardware that could easily be easily purchased from the US. And the politicians from smaller European states even questioned if being dependent on the UK, Germany or France was really that much better than being dependent on the US.

The fact remains that ‘Europe’ consists of many individual states, with individual potential and individual interests. A collective response, requires even more unity and even more cooperation. Instead, Europeans are increasing voting nationalists into power.
