I’m not trying to defend these guys in particular, but “protecting yourself” can mean losing only 13% when everything else loses 60%. Unfortunately.

17·6 days agoHe’s absolutely right! This is a great argument for nationalizing it into a public service. I imagine he’ll be happy to hand over what he’s got so far, and step back going forwards. Thanks Sam!

4·13 days agoI’m fully within a bubble here, but I’d say there are calls to violence from a minority on the left, but little to no actual violence demonstrated. There are calls for violence on the right from a larger proportion of their population, though perhaps still not the majority of them, and actual violence and murder frequently documented on the books.
I think the people on the left are often on the left because they have a certain respect for human life, unfortunately all human life, and we tend to believe in the political system more, rather than resorting to violence outside that system. We also tend to believe in people’s bodily autonomy, which leads to people’s right to not get punched in the face against their will. We also tend to not believe in the death sentence, even for the most heinous crimes.
Typically the calls for violence from the minority on the left are a frustrated desire to respond to violence with violence, to resist violence with violence, or to throw off the system entirely and build a new one, which often requires violence.
But there’s relatively little actual violence, at least right now, with a few calls from a few keyboard surfers.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What movie terrified you as a child? Or what character?
10·13 days agoWhen I was young, but not that young, there was a show called Duckman or something like that. I didn’t get the channel at home, but I was sleeping over at a friend’s house, and he got this channel, so it was on late at night.
In the episode the main character breaks up with a woman, and she’s like stalking him for revenge or something, I don’t remember the plot. But in one short scene he’s taking a bath to relax after the stress she’s been causing him, and she pokes her head up out of the bath water with crazy eyes and then pulls him under.
There was something about that I very much didn’t like. That was the only episode of the show I ever saw, but I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be a burnout comedy ala Beavis and Butthead or something, and I don’t even think this particular moment was meant to be scary. It was probably meant to be exaggerated and silly. But the crazy lady coming out of the water where she shouldn’t be able to be? Nope.
That fucked me up, on and off, for years. I’d just be laying in bed, and then the image or even the concept would come to me, and I’d feel uneasy. Despite not being in a bath at the time! Ugh.

5·13 days agoI think their position is that it’s not political violence if “they’re right”. That’s just standing up for truth.
Political is when something is untrue like, I dunno, periods or something.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Call for Proposals: Fediverse Multimedia GrantsEnglish
0·28 days agoAh, okay! So it’s meant to be more like “user research” than, like, a GameJam which might also bring together a developer and artist, but for the purpose of collaborating on some finished project.
That makes sense! Though part of me feels like maybe it would have been easier to find a bunch of content creators and developers separately, and then pair them up or something. I assume a content creator who arrives together as a team with a developer will already have a lot more context than the average user. 😛
But anything more that gets done is sweet, so good luck! We’re all rooting for you.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Call for Proposals: Fediverse Multimedia GrantsEnglish
1·28 days agoI’m not sure I understand the team premise…
They want a developer to work on adding multimedia applications or features to the Fediverse, and they also want artists to make content for the Fediverse, both of which make sense, but why team them up? Is the intention that the content creator member be the first user of the features the developer is developing? If so there might be a boring lead-time where the content creator can’t do anything and they’re just waiting on the developer to build a thing.
I’m not saying it’s a bad idea necessarily… I think I’m just confused at the shape of what they’re hoping to come out of this.
It could be the case that there is some “mega engineer” that is important enough to have access to enough credentials to be able to put this together. Probably you could build around any one person having access like that, but some combination of people need to have keys somewhere.
But “DevOps Engineer” doesn’t sound like the person who should have access to the root pursestrings…
