Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some alternatives to ring cameras?

Looks like the bear is more afraid of the boar, but in the snow, the boars charge would be blunted, so I’d give the advantage to the bear’s paw.
We do have boar in parts of the United States, but my main exposure to them has been in stories of royal medieval hunting parties (including GoT).
Yes, excellent points.
I never thought of bown bears as apex predators–the black ones around here subsist on berries and our grizzlies are largely pescatarians. Found some videos of skirmishes between boars and bears though.

Ever read “Subliminal Suggestion”? Probably slightly paranoiac, but it does go into games advertisers like to play, and implying sex and death is primary among them.

55·2 days agoThat is a weird expression to be making in an advertisement, which usually wants to emphasize conventional attractiveness. A team of people decided that this is the shot they wanted to go with, so there has to be a reason.
Also, my earliest point of contact with pornography was the late 70’s, when me, my mom, and my sister would be outside a store visiting the city waiting for my dad to come out with something in a brown paper bag… so I don’t think it’s inconceivable that the art team would have had some exposure given the time frame and the fact that who knows where the DeBeers advertising team was even located.

We don’t need to hunt to subsist when we can exist on a plant-based diet. The practical reason to get rid of predators is primarily to prevent livestock depletion, and also baby-snatching (dingos) and Fifi-grabbing. Personally, I’m not OK with getting eaten by a tiger or a boa constrictor, so I totally undersand why people would want to eliminate human predators.
There’s a philosopher, who also happens to be a talking gorilla, that pointed out humans, as a species, eliminate anything that competes with it for food. Modern humanity has absolutely no balance with nature, and, if the fate of the mammoth is an example, never did.
Yes. I just visited Missouri once and whatever department in charge of hunting/preservation put out this amazing magazine just absolutely dripping with love for nature, a combo of hunting advice, animal lore, and scenery porn. I remember one article in particular about how to stack brush to encourage critters to grow; sure, maybe you want to grow critters so your beagle can flush them out and you can shoot them, but still, kinda cool to have SOME responsible stewardship with the land instead of playing Playstation all day.
I mean, ideally, yes; I wouldn’t romanticize the entire hunting population, given the amount of garbage I see in the woods.
Agree… though I think similar activities to fishing would be more like rock hounding or mushroom hunting–things that keep you focused on your environment instead of what you’re holding in your hands (like whittling).
Also skipping rocks is really hard on my shoulders these days.
What I discovered when a friend took me fishing is that having an activity to do while outdoors is a lot more fun than just hanging around looking at the scenery. And fishing is great because most of the time there isn’t anything happening, so you can enjoy the scenery while still have something to " do".
What do you think they did in the before times? I imagine you could part out the corpse and give it to your buddies to carry home.
Edit: Or they tie it to a long branch and all carry it out whole?
Prey animals overpopulate because we’ve gotten rid of predators.
But the way it works in nature is that an underpopulation of prey leads to a decrease in predators (starvation) which leads to an overpopulation of prey which leads to an overpopulation of predators which leads to an underpopulation of prey… not sure there’s any way to escape cruelty in nature even if you don’t want to participate in it.
Not in this case, because hunting legally means you are preserving the ecosystem, culling a population that would likely starve in the winter and preserving breeding stock to keep the species going in a healthy manner without genetic bottlenecks.
MIssouri has some absolutely amazing wildlife preservation because conservationist make common cause with hunters.
They’re probably not, because this is my own self-serving and cowardly justification not to hunt.
Just like, “Voting is stupidly ineffective compared to firebombing Walmarts, so I don’t vote (and I also don’t firebomb Walmarts).”
