  • 3 1/2 years here, and I feel like I have pretty honest takes but of course ymmv.

Moderation can be hit or miss depending on the community. Some have a heavy hand, others are light. Some have rules like no discussing AI and can lead to a ban, gaming has a rule I keep forgetting of it’s really a “gaming news” community and you’ll have posts removed that are just about gaming, etc. Long story short, always read the sidebar rules before posting, and don’t take it personally if a post is removed. Check to see if there’s another community that your post may fit better in. There are some jerk mods, but we make fun of them at [email protected]

As for topics, I mean you’re with a bunch of star trek/linux nerds here, just like reddit early platform adopters are tinkerers and nerds so you’ll notice a lot of conversations will eventually point towards those topics. There is more virtue signalling here, no matter what you’re going to have someone tell you you shouldn’t even mention X or Y and you’re horrible for it. Just tune them out, or argue, whatever you want. Have confidence in what you post.

The cool thing is we’re small enough where you can get to know people here, you’ll see similar usernames every once in a while and it feels like an actual community. It’s also small enough where you can have an impact if you choose to. A lot of people come and say “We don’t have X community”. That’s where you get to make that community if you want, and grow it to something cool. I’ve found that there are people here interested in the niche things, but most are too afraid to build a community around it. We have [email protected] if that’s something you would like help with.

  • Same with the Simpsons Michael Jackson episode, 30 Rock and It’s Always Sunny also had black face jokes that ironically were meant to make the viewer feel extremely uncomfortable and realize how racist the character was being that are now gone.

Whether you agree with the jokes/premise or not, I believe we shouldn’t pretend like none of that happened. To me that makes it worse. The fact that we feel so uncomfortable with it now proves that we are marching forward, and that doesn’t mean we blindly hide from our mistakes. I like what WB did with Looney Tunes, they put a disclaimer warning that it was there, and that it was from it’s time, and that to remove it would mean removing the evidence of how far we’ve come.

  • It only takes a couple of times to realize how quickly something you care about can be taken away and you’ll never see/hear it again. Netflix brought on such convenience. I remember I watched Scrubs front to back multiple times, until one day I was told that it was leaving and suddenly I couldn’t watch it anymore.

Youtubers and creators come and go, if there is something you care about it’s on you to preserve it. No one else will.

I wish there was a legal way for me to create a “backup” version for others to watch like a PeerTube instance, but to creators they would see it as not fair to them, so unfortunately my collection remains private.

  • So many reasons. The company is American and it is holding value for Americans, so it’s beholden to the SEC and a thousand compliance laws in the US.

Crypto as you know it is anonymous, but exchanges to operate in the US have so much scrutiny and compliance. They’ve had Id verification for years.

So in this case yes, it was the largest heist on currency in history, and a massive chunk was Americans’. I’d be shocked if they didn’t investigate.

Not to mention if it’s happening with crypto, it’s happening g with standard banks too. Not investigating would leave everyone else vulnerable to it.

  • That’s been my experience. The other day we had a post that made fun of “sportsball” and very few seemed to get the irony of it. Sure I made that joke for a while when I was younger, then I realized that by doing it I was doing the same thing to those who like sports that they did to me in high school with video games.

It’s not some equalizing or justice, it’s lowering yourself to their level. What’s worse is that at least most of them did it in high school when that stuff mattered. It’s sad doing it now as adults when it takes nothing to just be accepting of everyone’s interests.

  • The virtue signalling here is exhausting and constant. It doesn’t matter what you post or where, 1/4 of the comments will be trying to convince you that you are horrible for whatever it is you posted about, and how the obvious moral thing would be to run off into the woods and eat berries. Everyone is boycotting everything. No nuance ever.

Example: You donated time at a homeless shelter and want to provide a link to others to help donate? The page takes paypal, don’t you understand how horrible that is, and you’re horrible for suggesting they pay in paypal!

I think it scares a lot of people away from Lemmy, and frankly from our political causes as well. People spend so much time making everyone else feel terrible for even moderately trying that they just give up, the other side is usually pretty willing to accept them in and say “no no, you aren’t horrible, look you’re a good person”. With Lemmy and Reddit they feel annoyed as hell here and not welcome, go back to Reddit where they get a warm hug in the thread. With politics they’ll all share in how the other side is crazy. It feels good to be included, and Lemmy is very exclusive.

For a bunch of nerds who claim to have been picked on a lot in high school, we sure do push people away quite a bit.

To turn the example around, a better way to rephrase the response would be “Hey very cool! Is there a way to pay without paypal?”
