  • There absolutely is a quite large cohort of people in US who don’t know good food. Sometimes through no fault of their own. As an example, my partner was raised with dry, overcooked meats and lots of industrial “food solutions” sold in boxes. Stuff like, kraft Mac 'n cheese, hamburger helper.

I had plenty of that stuff growing up, too, but much less, and it was more of an occasional “emergency dinner” thing, and even as kids we knew it wasn’t great. She, on the other hand, rarely encountered a proper home-cooked meal. It still makes me sad to think about that.

I had to take it upon myself early on to show what cooking could be and ended up changing her mind on a ton of different foods. There was a long list of things she thought she didn’t like, like Brussels sprouts. And even more things that were totally new. As it turned out, she just never encountered them prepared in a way that approached their potential, if at all. If it didn’t come from a box, it was boiled when it shouldn’t have been, or cooked to hell and back. (You have to give a little credit to her folks, as at least that means they tried at some point, and they definitely grew up worse.)

Even common things like turkey. She had never eaten an actually moist turkey because it was always cooked beyond recognition.

    Anyway, she’s better now

  • There may be different tiers of pods but, in my experience, pods make a far-worse end product than even drip machines.

The advantage still seems to be in the fast individual cup for relatively cheap. Which kind of makes sense in a shared environment like an office, where you might not want to spend time setting up a brew and waiting.

Also, individualism. Your pod is yours, an individual “unit” of coffee you can do whatever with without worrying about someone else messing up a shared system, or having to share. No need to wait for a whole pot to go, and jump in at the perfect moment so you can make it “your way”. It avoids a lot of conflict. Some people are so extreme about hygiene as well. A pod brewer in a busy environment might be perceived as cleaner than a shared pot.

When you optimize for speed, hygiene, conflict-avoidance and hyper-individualism - without regard for quality or avoiding waste, etc. - a pod system is kind of the logical place you end up at.
