With a few notable exceptions there’s not a lot of mourning for general programmers not knowing CPU instruction sets, or manually placing binaries instead of using the install wizard. At this point you’re lucky to get an install wizard.

It was seen as training on how to use the machine and access to what the more experienced coder was doing. It was of course also back when on-the-job training still existed instead of just throwing the new guy in a corner and expecting them to pick it up themselves.

Once upon a time the junior dev’s job was to clean the mainframe and type up the punch cards.
It used to be that airliners had a captain, co-pilot, and engineer to manage the engines and other systems. With increasing automation and system reliability the engineer position was made redundant. No profession is safe from stagnation.
Don’t know if it was you but someone pointed out a few months ago that the 7900 was the last 24GB card to be found for less than $1k and I grabbed one as an upgrade from a 3070. Running local models it’s less reliable than Claude at work, but not by much, and it was a good upgrade for gaming.
Before the return period was up it had gone from ~$900 to past $1.2k and I wasn’t eligible for a repair/replacement just a refund, the market is completely sideways.

For…40 years? Demand for older consumer CPUs has dropped to zero over a few years because the new ones are demonstrably more capable and basically the same price. That’s the whole idea behind Moore’s Law. There are niche applications where that hasn’t been true that were mostly filled by recycled hardware or single board computers. But in general people want the more capable device.
There’s a whole conversation to be had about software bloat that that chain enabled but planned obsolescence it ain’t.
Lear jets have a T-tail. It’s not hiding under the engines or anything, it would be plainly visible if it were there.
