FuckAI and what its doing to our world, economy, and to human beings but… why is Proton getting the hard treatment when so many other “AI first” businesses get a free pass to exploit/consume/destroy? Eli5: What is it about this specific privacy-focused business that has caused it to be so vociferously singled out for punishment? Like, have the people calling for migrating away from Proton stopped using Amazon, Atislan, Facebook, Twitter, Adobe etc?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Tisch’s NYPD drops no-bid phone-tracker deal with Meta-banned Israeli firm after progressive backlash
9·3 days agoThat is some headline. “Tisch” is a person apparently, not a sound you make when you are disappointed. I have no idea what “Meta-banned” refers to, or why it’s relevant to the NYPD - does Facebook no longer using it mean the NYPD are prevented from using it?

Nice. Maybe do a “Cold dead hands” text version to appeal to the freedom and 2nd ammendment fans.
Yes, plain text is the way to go. Advertising, special offer, promotion emails, reminders from brands you have subscribed to etc filter themselves out in to two categories when you see only text: those who bother to use words to tell you something (and might be worth reading), or brands whose emails contain virtually nothing (apart from a handy unsubscribe link) once the pretty pictures have been expunged.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•As AI revives magnetic tape, Fujifilm plans biggest buildup in two decades
15·6 days agoLong term storage for masses of cold data seems like it would be useful for when it rarely needs to be retrieved - my mind goes to user data like location and search terms for later use by law enforcement (but I am paranoid and all out of tinfoil). What innocuous real world uses would this data in this format be used eternal but infrequent recall?

10·17 days agoInteresting. It doesn’t even mention Add Ons or Extensions (unless I missed ut, I only saw webGL extensions). I know a lot of it is inferred, but is still remarkably accurate. The “Times you looked away” box being accurate for me was a real slap in the chops.

I like eBay - you can find and support good small sellers (people who are similar to you, just every day regular people). What made you stop shopping at Amazon out of interest? For me it was learning how Amazon treat their employees and union organisers. The pissing in bottles, the leaving the dead man lying on the floor and making people woe to around his corpse. The making people come in during a hurricane. This was 10 - 15 years ago (way before the Ring camera and AWS stuff came out); a buddy of mine get a job in an Amazon distribution centre (UK) and did 47000 steps in one shift. Some horror stories from there. So far eBay seems like the better option IMHO
I might be wrong, but they have not done anything to affect the privacy credentials of their privacy-centred vegetable dish. Unless Proton have they previously declared that they would not stuff AI in user and employees faces, I am struggling to understand why Proton specifically has triggered a backlash.
Sorry: I started with vegetable analogy but gave up halfway - the meat of the response is lost without the privacy/AI context.
