  • Right, good that you’re here. I phrased it specifically as “anti-scientific”, because of this post of yours:

That’s a strawman argument. The comic makes up a situation that doesn’t happen to rail against scientific consensus. If you find a natural scientist claiming “All X is Y” with full confidence and without using a ton of qualifiers, then don’t talk to them.

Similarly, reading individual scientific papers isn’t very useful. Talk to a doctor for nutrition advice. They spend years learning a condensate of what science has figured out. You’re not gonna catch that up by reading a selection of papers.

  • Frankly, I would only downvote your comment, because there’s the anti-scientific carnivore community on here and while your take is technically correct, it just sounds like it leads into their horseshit.

Like, no, fibre isn’t a nutrient, but that’s the point. It being indigestible to humans is what makes it great.
It fills up your stomach without adding calories. It physically blocks your stomach acid from digesting food, therefore slowing sugar intake and avoiding excess sugar being put into fat on your hips. And on the way out, it scrubs your insides, which also seems to have tons of benefits. And it just makes your shit slide out very easily, which is also great.

Similarly with carbohydrates. No, they’re not essential, because our bodies are excellent at survival and can also use proteins or fat for energy. But them being essential would only be relevant, if we’re avoiding them completely, for which there’s no reason. Moderation and wholemeal is advisable, sure, but entirely avoiding food with carbohydrates limits your selection and could therefore deprive you of other nutrients.

  • The only pointer I can give, is that you would probably want to use ActivityPub for the federation protocol, and you could potentially look at Mastodon’s implementation of that, since it’s also implemented in Ruby On Rails.

Mind that there can be differences in how the federation should work, for example Mastodon doesn’t have post titles, which you would presumably want on a fan fiction site…

  • I’d say technically it’s Rust, because you can do everything from embedded/kernel development to web frontends (via WebAssembly).

I do like the versatility, but I agree with what has already been commented, that you shouldn’t worry about this yet.
Newbie programmers always consider it a daunting task to learn a new language and then you’re a few years in and just inhale a new language on a weekend for fun.

And when I say fun, I do mean that it’s actually educational to learn multiple languages. They emphasize different concepts, which gives you a new perspective and new patterns for solving problems.

  • Not really. Maybe there’s a torrent of the source code somewhere, maybe as part of Debian or whatever. But you’d have to adjust the automatic build process to use the torrented source code. Certainly not impossible, but a pain.

If a workaround is introduced by NixOS itself, they could mirror the source code onto another Git provider, at least I saw that suggested in the discussion I stumbled across.

Side-note: I’m not from the UK myself. repo.or.cz just wasn’t reachable, from what looked like a denial of service attack or AI scrapers, that’s why I looked this up.
Although right now, I believe I can reach it fine, but get a wrong checksum for the source artifact, so hopefully they haven’t been hacked. 😵‍💫

  • Yesterday, I read that certain software packages on the NixOS Linux distribution cannot be used in the UK, because they require downloading from the Git provider repo.or.cz, which just flat-out bans any traffic from the UK due to the Online Safety Act.

I have a colleague with two kids, who’s actually not unhappy about *something* being done to try to prevent children from accessing the internet unfiltered. But that colleague is a huge fan of NixOS, too.

So yeah, oof, even before we get into the very concrete problems this article talks about, there’s a lot of nuance these laws need to get right.

  • Hmm, isn’t that just a GUI to configure and run FluidSynth as a server? I imagine, you’d still need some program that reads the MIDI files and sends the notes to the server.

Well, and presumably that program would need to have the feature of starting playback at a certain measure as well.

But yeah, TiMidity++ is fine. I was just wondering, if I’m missing out on something by not using FluidSynth.

  • I use Lilypond to write sheet music, and well, it can also generate MIDI as an output.

You can get an IDE for Lilypond which has playback built-in, namely Frescobaldi, but I’ve had problems with it in the past (and to be fair, don’t really like IDEs in general), so I’ve been putting together my own workflow using CLI tools.

I guess, that is one advantage of TiMidity++ that I figured out since posting this question. It allows specifying the measure to start playback from, which doesn’t seem possible with FluidSynth:

timidity --segment=42-m # start at measure 42 and play until end
