I have always associated smart to a persons accumulated knowledge. But intelligent to how well you reason. So sure, AI is smarter. But that just means it can win at jeopardy.

I hate to break it to the anti-AI crowd. But using AI is uncomfortable for ,ost people. Further the interface is very immature and rough around the edges. So you are kinda saying do use AI… And it keeps changing. Just when you think you know how to work with it, they make more changes. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

I sometimes think of Patrick Stewart the same way as Huey Lewis and the News. Patrick was a stellar actor, and he prefered theater. But Hollywood paid the bills. Huey was energentic, charismatic and put on a great show. He and the News had a pasion for soul music. But pop music paid the bills.
Both got to follow their passion while making it big in something related. And good for them.

Hm, so boring from tomorrow to make profits today is catching up with them. Guess I am not surprised.
I dunno about that rational to say there isn’t a shortage. I know consumers struggle to buy GPUs, even when they are willing to pay a lot. And a buddy of mine works at a company where they couldn’t get enough GPUs for their datacenter and were forced to rent from coreweave.

So wait. What is the story with coreweave. You mentioned labs desperate for gpu, and there very much is a shortage. Coreweave rents that. So they should be making miney handover fist.

I would expect they probably brought in outside contractors to do the work. It’s somewhat specialized work, and there probably aren’t enough locals with the skills. That said, sounds like a decent zombie apocalypse refuge. But seriously, if you know that clearing the are is going to ruffle feathers, clear more than you need in the first shot to leave you room to expand later without having to get permission to clear more. Because now people will be watching. It’s a business, not a person. Morals don’t exist. Which is why decision makers at businesses should not be shielded from prosecution and jail time.

I gotta ask though, what did they expect google to do there? It’s not like the sale of that land wasn’t known to the government. And they did make their intentions known about building on the site. Sounds like they failed to file the proper paperwork that would have gotten approved anyway. And how does no one notice before 250k trees get cut down and the land graded. This wasn’t a few days of work here. This plays like local politicians green light all this, and once the people found out and weren’t happy, they are trying to divert the anger. And really, there should be enough anger for all involved.

Not young. Worked at a supermarket before the internet (technically it existed, but not in supermarkets and such. It was the very early dial up days… pre AOL and such. Anyway, the one manager hated me, and he would have given me that job if it existed. I got along with my coworkers. None of them had that job. Maybe the night time restockers checked once a night or something, I didn’t know all of them. But I don’t so. They just waited for a customer to tell them I believe. But back then, a freezer full wasn’t as big a loss as it is nowadays. And their margins were higher.

See I was thinking that at first too. But then the supermarket has to host the software to manage the devices. If it were just fridges, fine, but surely it is a ton of things, all with their own software… so letting the fridge talk directly to the companies servers saves the supermarket from needing to have serious IT staff.
Now there are a ton of ways to make it a safer connection so that it can’t be hacked so easily. From the sounds of things, even that was too much for the supermarket people to do. So default password it was.

And like every company that hears about agile these days.

This really is just like every other management trend. They take something that can have a positive impact and then try to apply it in all the wrong places without investing in making it work. AI can really help with a lot of mundane tasks that everyone dreads doing. And it can really help at finding information in an ocean of docs and pages. But… you have to invest in training people jow to use it, building the internal tools to make it effective, and in getting the garbage out of your existing docs. It can also be used for coding of course, but the ecosystem needed to do that well requires even more investment in basics. The fact that tech writers who know how to work with and document for AI aren’t being hired by the bundle tells you how wrong soo many companies are about their approach. Bonus points, if used well, AI doesn’t have to be obscenely expensive. At least until they start charging what it actually costs.

I keep trying to tell the school administration the same thing each time my special needs kid wanders into some gapping security hole and they call it hacking.

These are actually a good place to have a network connection. Can you imagine having to be the person who’s jod it is to walk to all of the fridges in the store and just check if they are at the right temp… every X minutes? After doing it for weeks, you probably wouldn’t even notice the one that is wrong.

That makes logical sense, but I am looking for a more solid explanation. Again, I am not saying it isn’t, I am asking how could I say that to someone and then back it up with a solid why.

So I agree on the impact, and on the why care. But I’m not seeing why waiting long makes it worse. Based on what you said, waiting longer could help if it can hold out until this tariff war is over (one way or the other). Then it might be possible to lower interest rates to soften the impact. If it can hold out for a whole new administration even, that could help a lot. Though that is also what would likely trigger it, as a new administration will likely restore regulations that have been relaxed, increasing costs to business. But I would rather pay that price at that time with that administration than this one.

I dunno. The market affect is mostly perception. I mean why should unrelated stocks suffer when AI companies fall, yet they do. So I don’t think the length of time actually impacts the severity of the crash. But I’m no economist. That’s more of a “I don’t see why”, rather than a “no it won’t”

“more clear that the real future of AI is small language and open-weight models running on local desktop computers” So where are we with those smaller models? I haven’t been following them. Are they any good?

Look, none of use should be cheering for a full on pop of the buble. It will hurt all industries. And we know the oligarchy has insulated themselves in ways that will ensure they feel very little pain. It will be all the workers who will feel it. As for data centers, I don’t think we need the bubble to burst to fight that. Lots of jurisdictions are already banning them. That is what we should be cheering for.

How about if the AI was marketed saying it specifically would not allow such things, but it did anyway. Does the company get off scott free? (Can’t say I have ever typed out “scott free”. That can’t be the real words, can it?)
I think the points you are making here are ones people miss. The societal perception that women should control sex creates the whole situation. In a way, women are expected to mask their desire for sex everywhere except the bedroom. Sadly, the western world is the progressive group on this. The rules on what women can wear in other countries doubles down on the masking. And we know how well that works for the women…
But have do we move forward on eliminating the source of the issue. I just don’t know. The system just treatments the symptoms with laws.
