The only way “ai” ends humanity is with the climate crisis. It’s the same problem. These dumbass skynet fears have no place in legitimate journalism.
Wtf are you talking about?
Was there an update I missed? Last I knew blocking instances left the users visible. It only blocked communities and their posts hosted on the instance.

and have a weird aversion to actually saying what game they’re writing about in said headline.
That’s clickbait. They think leaving out info will get more people to open the article.

It’s like someone looked at Star Wars and thought “This is some pansy shit. I need a Star Wars for a real man.”
Making excuses well just keep you where you are. You want the world to stuck less, you have a way to do that, and it’s more achievable than you claim. You have to be the one who wants it, though. You have to make the first steps out of your cynicism to do anything about it. Good luck.
Yeah. That $80 billion loss was all for training I guess 🙄
I’m not talking about personal use.
And none of those are “tool” level for the average company, so it’s not what’s being discussed.
I don’t think businesses want the overhead, but maybe some will. The capabilities will be much lower, though. The subsidized costs are high because of the hardware and power needed to generate the content it does. Companies willing to upgrade to comparable hardware and oversight would probably be just as willing to pay a higher subscription. Also, I would hope any company considering it would be able to see by then that the results aren’t worth the costs.
Even its tool status only exists because these companies subsidize the cost. In the event any survive the pop, realistic costs would price it out of being a frequent tool for typical workers.
So dogs actively playing in a park makes you think about how their owners must suck and leave them indoors? That’s a you problem bud. There are very real problems in this world, but it seems you can’t even see a good thing without twisting it into a bad thing. You should get some help with that.

Got it. That’s reassuring. Thanks again for the explanations!

First, thank you for the detailed response. I really appreciate it.
So from your explanation, I’m to understand that the risk here is just exposing sent data. Bad actors can’t spoof these certificates to send bad data or malware to a device?

Ok, so random networks (free WiFi) are even more risky, but what about mobile data networks? And is my home WiFi at risk? Is this an “update my router/modem” situation?
Second, what applications are at risk? Browsers are obvious, but most apps connect to the internet in some way. Is my lemmy app at risk? The local transit app? What about side loaded apps?
Also, are there any reasonable options for those eol devices? Assuming apps can be updated, what’s the risk level for a device that’s not receiving official updates anymore? Are there options or are the SoL?
Sorry for the deluge of questions. This is just confusing and concerning, and most comments I’ve seen are just jokes or assume a higher base of knowledge than most people have. Thanks for taking the time to break it down a bit better.
*Also, how legit is this site everyone is saying to check browsers on? Feels pretty sketchy to have a random site verifying safety in the middle of a situation like this.

Stop spreading the propaganda of these shit companies.
Lol. “If you don’t use the overhyped new product that’s ruining our main product, you can’t use anything.” Tech companies have always been…“unusual” in their reasoning, but this is another level of illogical.
